Meredith Danluck is a New York artist, director, and all-around amazing person who has a killer collection of power tools. VBS bumped into her a few months ago and discovered that she has been working on a film in West Virginia, a sort of impressionistic account of the current environmental catast
rophe in the Appalachian Mountains. Mining companies are destroying entire mountains in order to get at the coal inside them. Quickly and efficiently, the oldest mountain range in the world is being systematically obliterated. We sent Meredith and VBS correspondent Derrick Beckles to the hills and h
ollers of West Virginia to show us what the end of the world looks like.

sounds familiar. Somehow, we will find out the
true story and stop all the madness here, I stil believe because I know the strength given to me and the strength of the people here hang in there and thanks for the response it will take all of us together for this battle
I dont understand ... ( 2 months ago by WV24985)
I dont understand everyone saying WV is a poor state...I'll give you that with the exeption of mining jobs, the pay rates are lower, but at the same time, the cost of living is lower, and it balances out. Everyone here I know that will work, has everything they want. Where else can you buy a 4 bedroom two story house with a full basement on an acre of land for $25,000? You dont need 100k a year for that.
Wal Mart is #1 ... ( 2 months ago by pfunkmonster)
Wal Mart is #1 employer followed by hospitals and Kroger Car Insurance is the same as if I lived in a larger city most jobs pay 10 grand So obviously your WV is not my WV oh and most cannot take a bite of ya cause we have never been offered dental care and medical is not there as well I have been working much as well and I have made on average 12 grand with 2 years I was able to have a better pay and this is from 1992
Please understand ... ( 1 month ago by wvhollergirl77)
Please understand there are so many sides to any story...but the bottom line is we are destroying our earth. I am from WV, raised in the middle of nowhere (and proud of that), coal miners daughter but a mountain hugger. I love these mountains. I realize that so many families are fed by tearing off these mountains - but I still have to stand against it. Coal mining is our heritage but there are better ways of extracting the coal.

now to finish...I was never really involved in standing up against this until it happened in my own backyard. I hated it, but ignored it because it did not effect me...now it does and all though I never did anything in the past, I am now. Yes, workers are paid well by these companies. However, these companies could give a crap about those who work for them. Big Coal - is Big Business, they fill us with propaganda with the Friends of Coal Commercials to the freaking concerts.

You people know ... ( 1 month ago by ern552)
You people know nothing about coal companies in here. You take a few people and apply their mistakes to every coal company in West Virginia. Until you've lived here your entire life and been involved in the industry, don't say a word. As for those of us who really know what mining is all about, including strip mining, it's way different. And yes, I do absolutely love the mountains! They're my favorite site in the world. But guess what, I'd rather eat. Without coal, my family would be destitute.

I was born and ... ( 1 month ago by rockdusted)
I was born and raised in the coal mining towns of WV. My father and grandfather were killed in the mines. I know that many people make their living from coal. You can make a living at it without being a total imbecile. You destroy the mountains, water, and wildlife, then what's the point of being there? I'm hearing people claim that the only way they can make a living is to shit where they eat! Dogs don't even do that! Wake up! If you can't find a job in a deep mine, move.

WV has a long ... ( 1 month ago by rockdusted)
WV has a long history of neo-colonialism (semi-slavery). The coal companies have a lot of money, and what they want you to think is that there's no other way but theirs. The truth is that when the populace works together, they can get something done - like forming the unions, for example. As long as you act independently, you are at the company's (lack of) mercy. Remember when WVians blocked the proposal to take NJ's landfill waste? Fight for yourselves together!

I worked for 16 years in the Mine mentioned in the Paint Creek watershed. It was approx. 2900 in elevation we took off 900 feet. You see the Landscape before it is reclaimed. The property was useless the Company spent 4 million Dollars to build 1 access road 3 lane
to the top. The Paint Creek Watershed while
we were working stocked trout in Paint Creek
2 additional roads were built later. A Park was built for the Public by the Coal Company.
Don't say a word? ... ( 3 weeks ago by fizzybgood)
Don't say a word? Forget about it - if you think we're going to shut up you can take that and stick it where the sun don't shine. Most of my extended family lives in WV, both of my grandfathers were coal miners and although I did not grow up in the area, I will continue to fight for my heritage and for my family who has to deal with the hazards of this type of mining. I will never stop, not until the practice has ended.

MTR is horrible. ... ( 3 days ago by 3273049)
MTR is horrible. But there is an alternative. See the grassroots project being developed for Coal River Mountain. A wind farm on top of the mountain! We should help them get it going. No destruction; free air!
Mountains/valley ... ( 1 day ago by dancingoncars)
Mountains/valley systems are important for streams/water systems. Even though trees will grow on the land again, the depressions and mountains caused by glaciers during the ice age wont just spring up again. He past old mines created using the old system of mining.

Tips to help you create better videos

1. Eye Candy.
Think about some of your favorite videos, ask yourself, what interesting shots and b-roll need to be captured to make your video entertaining to watch.

2. Good Lighting.
The main difference between amateur and professional videos is the quality of the lighting. Poor lighting creates graininess and poor quality videos too. (*Hint* In most studios, the lights and the cameras can be adjusted up and down to get the correct amount of light.) For your home studio make use of fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs produce a nice soft light with no harsh shadows. You can buy fluorescent light kits or you can save a lot of money and make your own fluorescent light box. It is best to use a three point lighting system which is fairly standard in most studios.

3. Tripod.
Use a tripod for shake free shooting. Tripods come in all sizes and quality. Most camcorders used today are only small and weigh very little so there is no need to buy a tripod to suit a heavy professional video camera.

4. Microphone.
The built in microphone on your camcorder is not the best to use if you can avoid it. Buy a directional one that can be mounted on top of your camcorder. Otherwise mount the microphone on a boom or support just out of view of the camcorder but close to the subject. Another option is to use a microphone that clips onto your lapel and as used by newsreaders on television. These are very effective and can be purchased for less than $50. No need to buy a wireless unit, but you need enough cable to run from the camcorder remote microphone, up the inside of your shirt and to your lapel. Bear in mind that you will normally be seated within six feet of the camcorder so the microphone should have plenty of cable.

5. Avoid Zooming and Panning.
Avoid zooming in and out and panning from side to side as much as possible. It is recommended that you set the zoom prior to recording.

6. Pre-Roll and Post-Roll.
Allow a few extra seconds after starting and before stopping the camcorder and the actual start and finish of the action you want to record. This allows for better editing once the shooting is over. Not allowing for the pre-roll and post-roll can make editing difficult. If you are filming yourself then start the camcorder recording with the remote control, wait six seconds before you start talking and at the end let the camcorder run an extra six seconds before stopping. This will give you plenty of time when editing.

7. Remember It is A Small Screen.
When shooting videos to add to your web site, normally the player will be 320 x 240 so avoid wide scenes, keep it close to see the detail. If you are filming yourself talking, you should be within six feet of the camera and preferably from the waist up. Keep the content simple and uncomplicated, do not have much happening in the video and keep it quiet-on-the-set.

8. Think Like a Photographer.
When shooting a video, do it like a photographer taking individual shots. Plan your video shoot, record for a short while from one position then stop recording, reposition the camera or yourself then shoot again. This will reduce excessive camera movement in your video. Using these tips will ensure that you can shoot and produce quality website videos of a better quality than most people. Remember, practice makes perfect and soon you will be getting great results on the first take.

9. Look at the Details.
Sometimes, you are so focused on your subject that you do not notice the surrounding elements of the scene. Only later, when you are reviewing the footage do you notice an unsightly trash can in the background or a tree sticking out of your subjects head. I like to scan the video screen carefully before shooting to make sure there is nothing in the shot that I may have overlooked. You may be surprised what you find!

Use our search feature, at the top of the page, to find videos about your favorite topics. There are tons of videos, for example, type in "Bikini contest", "Body building", "Guitar lesson", or "How to (anything)". Search for "Commercial", you will see cool ads and funny commercials. Notice the video techniques used to capture each video, you may very well find many helpful tips and tricks to use as well as many techniques to avoid when making your own videos... have fun.
