Student Debt: Denying the American Dream

Uploaded by: tbingaman
Video Description:
Over the past 20 years, federal investment in higher education has decreased significantly. The maximum Pell Grant award used to cover over 60% of the average tuition and fees. Today, the average award covers just 33% of those cost. Student loans, both federal and private, represent a much greater percentage of a student's financial aid package. In the past year alone, we have seen the largest cuts in the history of the student loan program, totaling $12.7 billion and the average Pell Grant award has decreased approximately $120.

To get paid well you have to deliver a product in demand. Nobody hires political science majors at $80K.
It is short sighted ... ( 8 months ago by Tibbon)
It is short sighted to say that you should just be a smart student and get scholarships. There is only so much money out there. If everyone had a 4.0 GPA and a perfect SAT, not everyone would automatically have all of their college paid for. The total amount of non-loan aid available is significantly less than the total cost of college nationwide. Not everyone can only go after high paying jobs. Same reasoning as above. We need kindergarden teachers, social workers, non-profit workers &artists

If a bachelor's degree is the new high school diploma, then why get one? What do you need two high school diplomas for? Oprah Winfrey has done so much damage by telling kids to go to college. Maybe she's getting kickbacks from Sallie Mae.

He has a point. ... ( 5 months ago by N9olan)
He has a point. College has completely transformed in to a business under the guise of learning institution meanwhile there are PLENTY of people who did not attend college and they are dignified millionaires and billionaires. Yes everyone should go to college but certainly not under this awful money making scam that is infused into the institution of education. "Bachelor's degree is the new high school diploma"- is nothing but good old fashion marketing.
Yes Tibbon and gpk ... ( 5 months ago by N9olan)
Yes Tibbon and gpk you are correct. Also, if you look at some surveys of millionaires that live in the U.S., most of them either did ok in college, did not go to college and/or did ok in high school. Everyone should strive for good grades but the ability to put what you learned in to profitable practice and action is vastly more important than an irrelevant to life GPA and SAT score-and that applies wither you've gone to high school and/or higher learning or not!

"EDUCATION IS A RIGHT NOT A PREVILIGE!" Is a time proven valid point but he/she should pay off their loans. You dont need a credit history to buy a house. There are PLENTY <--(with great emphasis on "PLENTY") of people who pay full price.

Um u need a credit history to get a loan to finance a house! Plenty of people is an opinion! Maybe there are plenty of people where u live who pay cash but where I live it costs 850k for a 3br 2 bath house! Most millionaires don't have 850k of liquid asset!
U have no idea wat you are talking about! I am an accounting magor and it is absurd to claim that u don't need a credit history to buy a house! Yes it is possible that u don't need a credit history but winning the lottery is possible!

Plenty of people pay the total amount upfront for a home without a credit history because there are plenty of people who do not want to deal with a credit agency and/or the total price does not significantly exceed their liquid assets-Even with having a bad credit history. The percentage of those who can is greater than those who cant. I know what I'm talking about; and is that possible enough for you?

-If you want to "make a difference" do it with a low-cost or no education- whatever you can reasonably afford. If you want a career that "makes a difference" and pays the bills, do what other hipsters do and mooch off of your parents. -You can get a credit history just by using a credit card occasionally, saving money, then buying a vehicle with a large down-payment, etc. Until then, don't be greedy and look for a house. Rent an apartment or room.

Or there's always the alternative: whine and complain and blame others for your debt, while much of the rest of the world lacks food/water.

Amen. I am working 30 hr a week and full time school as well. Barely a sophmore undergrad, aiming for a phd, but i'm going to have to settle for a quick tech school cause there's no way I can afford post grad work. My passion is to find new cures for psychiatric illnesses. But, apparently America doesn't need that I guess, since they won't help pay for the education.

Who cares about the rest of the world, this is America, we live in America. We are founded on the freedom to pursue the American dream. The freedom is denied by the costs of education, unless you're born rich. So it's right that the rich can contribute their gift to society and not the poor?

You can't take bankruptcy on a student loan. You will be permenantly trapped. If you can't pay it off, the interest will acrue on and on. A $10,000 student loan will eventually be 100,000. That's the fact. I'ts called governmental financial slavery!

Tips to help you create better videos

1. Eye Candy.
Think about some of your favorite videos, ask yourself, what interesting shots and b-roll need to be captured to make your video entertaining to watch.

2. Good Lighting.
The main difference between amateur and professional videos is the quality of the lighting. Poor lighting creates graininess and poor quality videos too. (*Hint* In most studios, the lights and the cameras can be adjusted up and down to get the correct amount of light.) For your home studio make use of fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs produce a nice soft light with no harsh shadows. You can buy fluorescent light kits or you can save a lot of money and make your own fluorescent light box. It is best to use a three point lighting system which is fairly standard in most studios.

3. Tripod.
Use a tripod for shake free shooting. Tripods come in all sizes and quality. Most camcorders used today are only small and weigh very little so there is no need to buy a tripod to suit a heavy professional video camera.

4. Microphone.
The built in microphone on your camcorder is not the best to use if you can avoid it. Buy a directional one that can be mounted on top of your camcorder. Otherwise mount the microphone on a boom or support just out of view of the camcorder but close to the subject. Another option is to use a microphone that clips onto your lapel and as used by newsreaders on television. These are very effective and can be purchased for less than $50. No need to buy a wireless unit, but you need enough cable to run from the camcorder remote microphone, up the inside of your shirt and to your lapel. Bear in mind that you will normally be seated within six feet of the camcorder so the microphone should have plenty of cable.

5. Avoid Zooming and Panning.
Avoid zooming in and out and panning from side to side as much as possible. It is recommended that you set the zoom prior to recording.

6. Pre-Roll and Post-Roll.
Allow a few extra seconds after starting and before stopping the camcorder and the actual start and finish of the action you want to record. This allows for better editing once the shooting is over. Not allowing for the pre-roll and post-roll can make editing difficult. If you are filming yourself then start the camcorder recording with the remote control, wait six seconds before you start talking and at the end let the camcorder run an extra six seconds before stopping. This will give you plenty of time when editing.

7. Remember It is A Small Screen.
When shooting videos to add to your web site, normally the player will be 320 x 240 so avoid wide scenes, keep it close to see the detail. If you are filming yourself talking, you should be within six feet of the camera and preferably from the waist up. Keep the content simple and uncomplicated, do not have much happening in the video and keep it quiet-on-the-set.

8. Think Like a Photographer.
When shooting a video, do it like a photographer taking individual shots. Plan your video shoot, record for a short while from one position then stop recording, reposition the camera or yourself then shoot again. This will reduce excessive camera movement in your video. Using these tips will ensure that you can shoot and produce quality website videos of a better quality than most people. Remember, practice makes perfect and soon you will be getting great results on the first take.

9. Look at the Details.
Sometimes, you are so focused on your subject that you do not notice the surrounding elements of the scene. Only later, when you are reviewing the footage do you notice an unsightly trash can in the background or a tree sticking out of your subjects head. I like to scan the video screen carefully before shooting to make sure there is nothing in the shot that I may have overlooked. You may be surprised what you find!

Use our search feature, at the top of the page, to find videos about your favorite topics.
