Thanks for posting this. This was big news to me. Looks like RCA invented large format stereo audio cassettes in 1958 - 5 to 6 years before Norelco released its "compact cassettes" in 1963-64. Marketing of the RCA tape cassettes must have been awful. I was only a little kid at the time but already tuned into technology - including transistor radios, hi-fi, color TV, battery TV and reel to reel tape. Nevertheless, I never heard one word about RCA cassettes before I stumbled on this YT video.

My dad still owns reel to reel tapes. He prefered the sound over the cassette tapes. I just find reel to reel to be such a hassle. You have set up the tape every time you play it. It takes like 5 minutes just to play one album.

I Wonder What They Sounded Like? I Bet They Were REAL GOOD! What AMAZING TECHNOLOGY! For Them To Have Auto Reverse, There Are So Many Types Of Players For Records And Tapes That I Have Never Seen Before, VERY INTERESTING! I Would Take A Bet Those Machines Cost A Fortune When They Were New And I Bet They Are Very Valuble Now

Once you practice ... ( 4 months ago by EntilZa1)
Once you practice at loading reel-to-reel it's not as bad as you think. Overall the sound quality is superb. While I love MP3s and digital recordings today, they've lost a lot of fidelity due to compression techniques. Once you get to AAC level, there's not really much left. People don't realise how much music they're not hearing when they use these formats. They're designed to satisfy the generic consumer market, which generally doesn't care much about good sound.

Dude your preaching to the choir. I own about 1 mp3 files and 10 cds. I am a big collector of lp's I have about 200. I think analog sound is really where it's at. I got turned on to lp records a few years ago and I haven't looked back. I was born in 82's so I grew up like everyone else with digital taking over analog. Luckliy I was exposed to reel to reel, turntables and cassettes. I consider myself very lucky to be exposed to analog sound

Well, I grew up in the 60's,70's I had records, cassettes, studied electronics, repaired TV's and all those players too. I would never go back to those methods of sound production. I know all the problems associated with them. The cassettes, melt in the car, ware out, brake, if you sit on them they crack, tape stretches, records melt too, scratch, ware out, ect. And all those machine have a lot of mechanical problem too many to list. Not to mention the fidelity is not as good.

I wonder what would happen if we were able to bring dvds to the 50s..... Would the music change? Would we all somehow become more intelligent because of other technical advancements taking place? *shivers* I hope the music would still change.

I just recently discovered this format in the last couple years. How nice to see a video describing the format and it's capabilities. And I LOVE the fact the machine had auto reverse. That in itself should've been a key selling point. I'll always however love my reel to reel tapes and my 45 and LP collection which I'll never part with. Thanks for posting this.

4-track? How long did those last before they were replaced by 8-track? Even that was killed off by cassette tapes in very short order.

Wow watch out 60's people big scam comin your way. I'll bet this thing made a loud HISSSSSSS sound as it played. I'll also bet you got a lot of practice at taking those two screws out to repair the tape. ALSO anyone remember how the regular sized tapes would somehow get of track and the other side of the tape would bleed through in reverse. Just awful. Anyway I'm one of the guys between 32 and 40 who has discovered record and will be sticking with them for all future music enjoyment.

Can't really understand why this product failed. Even got more features than the compact cassettes. The developers had really thought about everything. Was totally groundbraking when it came. A masterpiece of engineering it appears but I haven't tried them myself after all.

Tips to help you create better videos

1. Eye Candy.
Think about some of your favorite videos, ask yourself, what interesting shots and b-roll need to be captured to make your video entertaining to watch.

2. Good Lighting.
The main difference between amateur and professional videos is the quality of the lighting. Poor lighting creates graininess and poor quality videos too. (*Hint* In most studios, the lights and the cameras can be adjusted up and down to get the correct amount of light.) For your home studio make use of fluorescent light bulbs. These bulbs produce a nice soft light with no harsh shadows. You can buy fluorescent light kits or you can save a lot of money and make your own fluorescent light box. It is best to use a three point lighting system which is fairly standard in most studios.

3. Tripod.
Use a tripod for shake free shooting. Tripods come in all sizes and quality. Most camcorders used today are only small and weigh very little so there is no need to buy a tripod to suit a heavy professional video camera.

4. Microphone.
The built in microphone on your camcorder is not the best to use if you can avoid it. Buy a directional one that can be mounted on top of your camcorder. Otherwise mount the microphone on a boom or support just out of view of the camcorder but close to the subject. Another option is to use a microphone that clips onto your lapel and as used by newsreaders on television. These are very effective and can be purchased for less than $50. No need to buy a wireless unit, but you need enough cable to run from the camcorder remote microphone, up the inside of your shirt and to your lapel. Bear in mind that you will normally be seated within six feet of the camcorder so the microphone should have plenty of cable.

5. Avoid Zooming and Panning.
Avoid zooming in and out and panning from side to side as much as possible. It is recommended that you set the zoom prior to recording.

6. Pre-Roll and Post-Roll.
Allow a few extra seconds after starting and before stopping the camcorder and the actual start and finish of the action you want to record. This allows for better editing once the shooting is over. Not allowing for the pre-roll and post-roll can make editing difficult. If you are filming yourself then start the camcorder recording with the remote control, wait six seconds before you start talking and at the end let the camcorder run an extra six seconds before stopping. This will give you plenty of time when editing.

7. Remember It is A Small Screen.
When shooting videos to add to your web site, normally the player will be 320 x 240 so avoid wide scenes, keep it close to see the detail. If you are filming yourself talking, you should be within six feet of the camera and preferably from the waist up. Keep the content simple and uncomplicated, do not have much happening in the video and keep it quiet-on-the-set.

8. Think Like a Photographer.
When shooting a video, do it like a photographer taking individual shots. Plan your video shoot, record for a short while from one position then stop recording, reposition the camera or yourself then shoot again. This will reduce excessive camera movement in your video. Using these tips will ensure that you can shoot and produce quality website videos of a better quality than most people. Remember, practice makes perfect and soon you will be getting great results on the first take.

9. Look at the Details.
Sometimes, you are so focused on your subject that you do not notice the surrounding elements of the scene. Only later, when you are reviewing the footage do you notice an unsightly trash can in the background or a tree sticking out of your subjects head. I like to scan the video screen carefully before shooting to make sure there is nothing in the shot that I may have overlooked. You may be surprised what you find!

Use our search feature, at the top of the page, to find videos about your favorite topics.
